Strategy for Grown-Ups and how to master it

The people who end up running an organisation start life in one speciality or another and progress to the top because they have developed the ability to see the bigger picture, manage people well and demonstrate commercial savvy.

At the top they are responsible for strategy as well as operations but rarely are they trained in strategy, rather they are expected to have somehow picked it up along the way. Many CEO’s I know have made the point to me.

It would be helpful to equip the emerging talent in your organisation with an understanding of the rudiments of strategy, which doesn’t mean forking out to send them on an expensive MBA course.

Strategy can be seen as a complex subject but really it isn’t, neither is it purely about numbers, though a clear grasp of the P&L and Balance Sheet is essential. Numbers keep the score, as someone once said and certainly the ability to see important shapes and patterns in data is an essential skill. Strategy is about clarity of thought and direction based on a sound understanding of strategic context and the drivers of value and revenue growth. With this knowledge a good leader will have the confidence to articulate the organisation’s strategy cleary, inspire their colleagues and set a simple roadmap to grow value.

Strategy for grown-ups is the short, practical course we developed 20 years ago for coaching sessions with clients and has been adopted across a broad variety of sectors and markets ever since. It provides a comprehensive understanding of strategy and sets out how to create a clear strategic framework to grow and guide the business. There are six modules which can be coached in six one on one sessions or in a small group workshop for up to four.
